5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men” 1 Timothy 2:5-6 Imagine all the bills you owe being consolidated into one massive payment. (This is what happened to me when I entered the world of the ubiquitous Tesco Clubcard two years ago!) Now imagine all the money you’ll ever owe in your lifetime being piled up into one massive payment scheduled for 7th Jan 2041. You spend the next 30 years worrying if you’ll be able to pay. The great day arrives and you are woefully short. Half a million quid short. Then you discover the whole bill has already been paid! So the 30 years of worry (2011-2041) were totally unnecessary! It was all paid for already. Part of the reason we worry is that we are not yet 100 per cent convinced that our debt towards God is paid. This is a low level worry that comes to the fore, whenever we try and earn God’s approval. But it is all paid for – at the cross! This is the glory of the gospel, this is the best bit, so go ahead and spend the whole of today not worrying – you have peace with God, and you will NEVER be asked to pay for it! It’s been paid for – by Jesus, on the cross. He gave himself as a ransom for all!
